There are numerous factors that can affect the buying decisions of consumers. Of these factors, I believe that age is likely to have the strongest impact on consumer behavior.

People of different ages tend to show different shopping behaviours because age determines attitudes and habits. With age, people are inclined to spend money sensibly and cut the budget for luxuries because they need to save money to feed the family and prepare for retirement. Meanwhile, older generations are less likely to purchase hi-tech gadgets and accept modern means of payment than younger people, as age can limit the ability to adapt to technological change. These examples show that people in the same group show similar preferences in shopping behavior, regardless of gender and educational levels.

Levels of income,

Low income, pensions

Frequently

Luxuries, luxury brands

The age of a consumer also has a huge influence on his or her shopping behaviour because it is positively correlated with buying power. Personal wealth determines what people can afford, what they consider when shopping, and even the frequency of shopping as well as means of payment. Consumers in the 30s or 40s normally earn a higher salary than other age groups, and this is why they tend to shop more frequently and spend more money on luxury brands. They tend to pay closer attention to quality, visual appeal and brand names than functions and prices, for the simple reason that what they buy is part of their identity. They are conscious of how they are perceived by others. In contrast, elderly people or teenagers are less concerned about social comparison, as they do not have paid work.

On the other hand, for some consumers, other factors may possibly make a bigger difference than age to their buying decisions. One of these factors is the education background, which can determine one’s income and also the ability to embrace innovations, so it can impact the decision to follow fashion/buy trendy products. Secondly, personal interests and values can also affect their preferences in shopping: for example, either old or young music fans are willing to spend lavishly on a show of their favourite singer. In other words, sometimes, some other factors/forces can lead to the differences between individuals in the same age group when they make a purchase.

In conclusion, it seems that age can have a huge impact on buying habits, although other factors may sometimes have a bigger role to play.
