The emphasis on academic qualifications is reasonable because well-educated people can find well-paid jobs in this knowledge-based economy. An in-depth knowdge of an industry is valuable in a world where technology has been advancing rapidly. This can be achieved mostly at university, where students can learn tools, know-how and theories used in their future professions by attending lectures, doing assignments and passing exams.  It makes little sense to encourage these people to receive vocational training for the simple reason that jobs such as plumbing have a shortage of labour.

Another objection to promoting vocational education is that technicians can find work easily but may face a glass ceiling in their careers. What they learn at vocational school is limited to techniques and practices of performing some tasks and solving some problems, so they are not equipped with skills and knowledge for more complex, demanding jobs. They may not be able to fill management positions considering that they do not sharpen their literay skills and research skills in academic studies. Without a deep understanding of theories, principles and maxims underlying the functioning of a tool or system, they are not capable of bringing innovations, meaning that they may miss out opportunities to become chief engineers, project leaders, patent holders and entrepreneurs.

On the other hand, vocational qualifications could be recommended for those who may not perform well in academic settings because they can develop talents in some less academically- challenging jobs. This is understandable as people different in talents and some may not have the aptitude for handling higher education. They could receive vocational training instead and find employment in occupations where they can reach potential. This is also beneficial to the development of some industries, as businesses can stay financially viable more easily without spending enormously on wages and salaries due to a shortage of labour.

 

In conclusion, I agree that some people can be encouraged to work as tradespeople but I do not think the importance of university education is exaggerated.
