Some people claim that many things children learn at school have actually wasted their time. Other people argue that everything taught at school is useful in the future. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

People argue that what students learn may be a waste of time because schools provide a well-rounded education and the knowledge of many subjects may not be relevant to future careers. One primary objective of schools is to expose children to a great variety of subjects to discover their interests. Some subjects such as biology, physics, astronomy and geography may not related to the careers they pursue, and they may not have opportunities to put their knowledge into practice. Therefore, they will forget what they learn sooner or later, and this means that learning these subjects is not worth their time.

On  the other hand, opponents argue that formal education is critical to future achievements as students can sharpen their study skills. Learning different disciplines requires students to participate in different tasks and develop a broad range of techniques. For example, language classes or chemistry may involve group discussions, while subjects such as literature, mathematics and philosophy involve rational thinking and independent studies. Students with diverse skills are able and willing to explore new subjects and grasp unfamiliar concepts whenever they are assigned with new tasks or projects.

In my opinion, learning different subjects can also benefit students in the future by making them more creative. Some subjects may not have a direct impact on their careers, but they can increase their knowledge of the problems which can be tackled by different areas of studies, and they can also deepen their understanding of the progress in different fields. If they meet any challenge in their own careers or see any bottleneck, they may draw upon knowledge of other subjects to find innovative solutions.
